Dr.’s Broussard and Walton trained together in general
surgery and bariatric surgery in Birmingham,
Alabama. After residency each developed successful
general surgery practices in small to midsized towns (Broussard in southern Louisiana, Walton in northern Oklahoma).
Independently they developed successful bariatric surgery programs. After a couple of years it became clear to
each that “one surgeon” programs were not the optimal situation.
The doctors
kept up with each other at a yearly residency alumni meeting and occasional
phone calls. Once it was clear that
neither surgeon could attract an excellent bariatric surgeon to their
respective towns, they began to look for other opportunities. By serendipity they encountered Foundation
Bariatric Affiliates (FBA) who had the same ideas of an comprehensive pre and
post operative program in a specialty hospital.
With FBA’s financial backing and Dr. Broussard’s and Dr. Walton’s
expertise they opened the Foundation Bariatric Hospital of Oklahoma in March of
2006.
Gregory F. Walton, MD
Before Dr. Greg Walton became a physician and surgeon, he
was a patient in a burn unit. That experience lead him to dedicate his life to
helping other patients through their medical difficulties. It also helped give
him the caring heart that his patients so appreciate and admire.
Dr. Walton is an Oklahoma
native who earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center. He began his career with a general surgery residency at the Carraway Methodist
Medical Center,
a level 1 trauma center, in Birmingham,
Alabama where the chairman of his
program was unique in that he did many bariatric surgeries and trained his
surgeons to do them in addition to other general surgeries. This mentor was
also forward thinking in seeing the importance of the laparoscopic approach to
Gastric Bypass. Dr. Walton shared this interest and became focused on
performing bariatric surgery. He later set up a program for bariatric surgery
at a hospital in Enid, Oklahoma and performed hundreds more
bariatric operations in his three years there.
Dr. Walton has been awarded a fellowship in burns and ICU
medicine with the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research at Brook Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
He serves on the board of directors for the Oklahoma Medical Research
Foundation and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of
the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Walton’s other
professional memberships include the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, the
Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Southwest Surgical Congress, and the
American Medical Association.
He says, “We don’t cure obesity. We provide the best
possible treatments for it.”
Toby Broussard, MD
Dr. Toby Broussard was born in Morgan
City, Louisiana. He
attended Louisiana State University
in Baton Rouge
where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. Following this he entered
medical school at Louisiana State University
Medical Center
in Shreveport
and earned his M.D.
Dr. Broussard’s surgical training also began in Birmingham,
Alabama at Carraway Methodist
Medical Center.
After completing his surgical residency, he moved back to Louisiana and began a well rounded private
practice that he managed for 13 years.
During Dr. Broussard’s residency at Carraway Methodist
Medical Center
he was exposed to bariatric surgery and continued to develop a strong interest
in it while operating his private practice. Eventually, Dr. Broussard made the
decision to devote most of his time to bariatric surgery. He enjoys helping
patients transform their lives medically and socially. “[it] is not only
thrilling for the patients, but is particularly rewarding for me as a surgeon.”
Dr. Broussard says. His decision to accept a position with Foundation Bariatric
Hospital of Oklahoma was a natural fit and provided an incredible opportunity
for him to pursue his surgical passion.
Dr. Broussard is a fellow in the American
College of Surgeons and
diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. His professional memberships include
the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, Caraway Surgical Society, Gulf
Coast Vascular Society, Southeastern Surgical Congress, Louisiana Chapter of
the American College of Surgeons, Society of American
Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), St. Landry Parish Medical Society
and Louisiana State Medical Society.
